So there’s a few different ways to install the windows, but essentially, you have to glue the acrylic windows to the fiberglass cabin top and doors. There seems to be a bit of a question as to the best way to go about this, and I was interested in doing some research. Apparently, the method used in the plans is adequate to hold in the windows, but there seems to be a bit of an issue with the paint around the windows cracking. I heard about a different method from Glasair builders, and since that’s a composite aircraft, i figure they know a thing or two about putting windows in plastic planes. When you’re building an airplane, and you’re new to all this stuff, you have to make a decision, and just go with it. Obviously, straying from the plans can invite disaster, but in this case, I think it’ll be an improvement. So the way I chose is to use thickened epoxy to glue in the windows, then you put a couple layers of E-glass around the edges, then you smooth it out into the surrounding structure.
Should keep the cracking around the windows at bay, and hey, if it doesn’t end up any better, at least I gave it a shot! So I had trimmed the windows previously, and bethany helped me by masking the edges and getting everything ready. I had also previously made the aluminum “fingers” that hold the window in place for gluing, so we went ahead and mixed up some epoxy and glued in the first window. Success! I didn’t do the E-glass around the edge yet... I’ll do that later when I have the doors off. Anyway, that was fun - we’ll do the others later.
