picked up the engine hoist from james this morning, and got to hanging! here’s a tip. when the dude comes over to drop off your engine, get him to drop it onto a dolly that’s high enough to slip the legs of the engine hoist under. we couldn’t get the hoist directly over the engine, but it wasn’t too far off, so we just hooked up the chains and starting lifting. as the engine came up, it swung down under the hoist. we went slow, so it wasn’t a big deal. oh, and if you have access to an engine leveler, use it. actually, i’d say if you don’t have one, buy it. pep boys has em, and they’re worth every penny. it makes hanging the engine super easy. donuts make hanging the engine easier too. so four bolts, and the engine is on there! no interference with the engine mount and the sump either. sweet! now, i’m not sure that it’s time to bolt on the propeller, but i’m thinking that i’m gonna do the cowl sooner rather than later, so i figured, what the heck. let’s do it! alright... i’ll say it now. holy crap. have you ever bolted a 3 blade propeller onto an airplane? i have. boy. awkward is a word that springs to mind. it’s pretty maddening. i’m sure someone has a simpler way to go about it, and i’ll have to research this some other day, but for today, we just lifted the prop together and inched those bolts in the hard way. happily, everything slid perfectly into place with no cajoling. now it’s really starting to look like an airplane! we brought the cowling outside and stuck the upper half on to see how it looks. sweet. as a side note, now we don’t have an airplane propeller and engine cowl in our bedroom anymore. that’s a nice bonus!
