So over the weekend, a really nice guy from bonaco hoses & fittings named Brett came by to measure for new braided steel brake lines to replace all the stock plastic stuff between the master cylinders and the reservoir. let me tell you something... in all the time i’ve been fooling around with race cars, i’ve not seen lines like the ones he brought over. I’ll be the first to admit that i’m a sucker for braided steel lines, but these also had some kind of clear plastic sheath that goes over the braided steel as well. i think they call it a “chafe cover” or something. really nice. I pulled off the crappy plastic ones, and installed the bonaco ones, and it was a snap. where you’re supposed to run the lines through the two holes in the bracket in the center of the firewall, I just ran the lines through the larger lightening hole instead. i happened to have a large snap bushing that fit exactly, because somewhere along the line i had purchased the assortment from steinair. all i have to do now is somehow zip tie the lines where they go through the bushing to keep them in place. sweet. another cool thing is that the lines that run up from the passenger side brake cylinders to the reservoir now run straight up instead of wanting to run to the left to hit that dumb nylon “t”. the reason for that is that bonaco puts a 90 degree fitting on the end up there, so it routes perfectly. did i mention that the lines are nice? all the hose ends are crimped on, and the hoses are teflon, so they should last a long, long time! i’m really glad i did this, just for my own piece of mind. i kept eyeballing that plastic stuff, and even though people say it works, i feel better with quality stuff in there. i had previously ordered braided steel lines that go down the gear leg to the caliper as well, and i ended up replacing those with these new ones from bonaco.
another thing that was cool was that i had been sort of deferring the completion of my fuel lines because i’m using the andair valve, and i couldn’t come up with a routing that i liked. brett took a look, and gave me some suggestions. two days later, the fuel lines showed up, and he was right on the money. he left one end unterminated so i could set the lengths, so i’ll mark em and send them off to him to crimp on the correct ends, and that will be that! talk about customer service. it’s really nice to have a pro help you get unstuck on something. i’m excited to get the fuel system done and out of my life. more on that later...
